Gibson Traded to Red Wings by Ducks for Mrazek, 2 Draft Picks
In a major offseason move, goalie John Gibson was traded to the Detroit Red Wings by the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday. In return, the Ducks received goalie Petr Mrazek, a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, and a fourth-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Gibson, 31, has spent his entire 12-season career with Anaheim since being selected in the second round (No. 39) of the 2011 NHL Draft. This past season, he posted an 11-11-2 record in 29 games with a 2.89 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.
“(Ducks general manager) Pat (Verbeek) and I had some discussions last season around -- if I recall -- the Trade Deadline," Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman told NHL Network on Saturday. "John was dealing with some injuries at that time, so the timing didn’t really work... Leading up to the draft... we were able to (make the trade).”
Gibson has two seasons remaining on the eight-year contract he signed with Anaheim on Aug. 4, 2018. He leaves the Ducks as a franchise icon, holding records for starts and saves (14,034), and ranking second in wins and third in shutouts.
The move comes as Lukas Dostal has emerged as the clear No. 1 goalie in Anaheim. The 25-year-old was 23-23-7 this season with a 3.29 GAA and a .902 save percentage.
Yzerman added that Gibson was seeking a new opportunity. “Our understanding he was looking for a fresh start and saw an opportunity in Detroit to get in the net and play a lot of games. I’ve been assured he’s excited about coming to Detroit and we’re excited to have him.”
Verbeek confirmed to NHL Network that the Ducks had been "quietly" looking to move Gibson for some time, stating, "Over the last couple years, looking for a change. Today happened to be the right time."
Mrazek, 33, returns to the team that drafted him in 2010. This past season with the Chicago Blackhawks, he was 12-21-2 with a 3.35 GAA and an .891 save percentage in 38 starts.
